Sanity Saving Tips for Life with a Newborn & Toddler

Sanity Saving Tips for Life with a Newborn & Toddler

Being a mom is hard ! Once you add a new baby to your family it can get even harder and more stressful . Moms are constantly wondering why the new baby is crying, is she hungry, tired, sick… And if you have more kids at home you worry about them too. Are they dealing with the new baby okay? Are they getting enough attention ect! The worries are endless but I hope to help you release some of that stress with my sanity saving tips for life with a newborn & toddler below. Life is definitely different now that baby number two is here !

Mom Tip: A friend told me if both kids are crying grab the older one first, the baby is okay, but the older one will remember this moment and might be feeling neglected, if possible tend to the older kids needs first!

Id love to know your tips for surviving with a newborn! Get the convo started below .

Sanity Saving Tips for Life with a Newborn & Toddler

  • develop a routine & stick to it. I’m sure you have heard this before a 100 times… and that’s because it works! I know plenty of families with no routine and I’m not sure how they get through the day but I can tell you they seem more stressed then me! This will be a life save for you and your toddler. My almost 2-year-old is a creature of habit so jumping back into a routine after having our daughter was a must.
  • if you can, have your partner take your toddler for an hour a few mornings ( even just one or two will help )  a week so you can catch up with an am cat nap those first few months. Newborns sleep a lot and that’s the perfect time for a quick nap ( or shower! )
  • nap when your kids nap . Take time to rest during ONE of your newborn naps.  If your toddler doesn’t nap anymore pick a time to have quiet time during one of the new babies naps where you just relax and watch a movie on the couch!
  • exercise once you are ready. Listen to your body ( and doctor ) you don’t want to jump back into your workouts too soon but exercise is a great way to boost your mood and give you more energy. Plus you want to be in great shape now that you have kids to chase around. Our daily walks started as soon as we got home from the hospital and we all love them.
  • carve out time to do things you love/ spend time with just your spouse. Hopefully your toddlers goes to bed early like mine! That way you have time at night to relax with your partner . Pick a night once a month if you can for date night or time away with a friend .
  • stay connected with your friends. This is so important! You can’t spend all your time with only your kids. Make sure to stay connected with your friends. Make plans once a month, text daily to say hi and if you can plan a get a way with some friends, you deserve it ! Some mom friends and I went out last week at 5 and were home in time to help with bedtime! Even if it’s just a quick night out, its worth it.
  • be kind to yourself. Always remember you are doing an awesome job! Being a mom is tough work and newborns are so unpredictable until they are on a great schedule. Be nice to yourself !
  • involve your toddler when you can. Brody loves to help me clean , throw things away, take the trash out ect. When I am busy with the new baby I give him a towel and his own bottle of “cleaning ” spray ( it’s just water ) and have him clean the windows & tables . He also loves to go tot he fridge and get us waters , when I see him about to break down I quickly ask him to go grab me a water, works every time!
  • spend time outside when you can. Fresh air is a must for me! We try to get outside for at least 30 minutes a day to burn off some energy. Bored toddlers are no fun! Getting them outside will help them burn some energy & have some fun. I wear the new baby so I can still play with Brody. Lately we have been loving obstacle courses . Brody and my you get boxer like to do them together !!

Find Your Mom Groove

Find Your Mom Groove

Find Your Mom Groove

Find Your Mom Groove

We all know motherhood is amazing . But becoming a SAHM can seem a little crazy. Iv been a SAHM now for 21 months and I LOVE it, but I agree that it is not for everyone . Some of my friends are just starting to have their kids and they always ask me ” what do you do all day , do you go crazy?!” You have to find your mom groove . This might take some time and that’s okay.

Don’t be fooled by the moms that look like their lives are totally amazing. Remember social media is a place that people post their BEST pictures so stop comparing your life to theirs . Life isn’t always having the best behaved kids, cleanest house on the block or always looking like you just stepped out of a salon! But you can feel good & have some awesome days with your kids as a SAHM.

Id love to share with you how I found my groove and how you can too.  Below are my tips for:

  • getting a schedule together
  • when to clean/organize
  • you time
  • schedule for your kids
  • taking back your mornings

Find Your Mom Groove

  1. Getting a schedule together : It might not sound fun , but having a daily schedule can make your life so much easier.  I like to plan my weekly menu on Sundays or Mondays and meal prep to make things a bit easier. I wake up every morning around the same time ( before your kids if you can ) While having my morning coffee and doing my MM I try to plan my day.  Now that the cooler weather is here its easier for me to stick to mine and Brodys schedule.  ( more on his schedule below ) We eat lunch and dinner the same times each day to help keep the day predictable . You need to find a schedule that works for you and your family.
  2. When to clean : I like to clean and organize the house all day, ha! We try to clean up all the toys before we move onto something else. It sounds weird but Brody loves to help clean, we vacuum & mop the floors together 2-3 times a week after breakfast. While Brody eats lunch I quickly pick up the house and then do laundry once he goes down for a nap , this doesn’t take long so I still have time for other things while he naps. I also like to get dinner ready during his nap time.  After dinner I make sure to clean the kitchen, waking up to a clean kitchen will make your morning stress free! As soon as Brody goes to bed at 7 I do another quick clean up.  Since I kind of pick up throughout the day the house never feels totally out of control
  3. You time. You need time for yourself . Make some YOU time in the am or pm before your kids wake up or after they go to sleep.  Even if you take time for you a few times a week it can help. You need to feel good to get your groove back! Every morning make sure you get dressed , wash your face and throw on some mascara , staying in your PJ’s all day is never a good idea. Make sure you are also putting your health first and eat a balanced healthy diet.
  4. Schedule for your kids. Again this might not sound fun but get your kids on a schedule. Eat and sleep around the same times everyday. This is Brodys schedule now but I will change things up as he gets older.
  5. Take back your mornings. This one sounds the hardest but trust me it is worth it.  Wake up before your kids and your day will be a little less stressful.  I wake up and do a miracle morning and I highly suggest you do some version of this!

Postpartum Life Tips

I can’t believe its been one week since having Remi! Coming home from the hospital after having a baby can be scary! Not only do you now have a new life to take care of, you have to take care of yourself as well ( and siblings!)  If you are not feeling great postpartum , caring for your newborn can be even more difficult and stressful. If you are feeling not so great always remember you are NOT alone! Are you are looking for a fun community of moms Id love for you to join my private face group . We share lots of workouts, recipes, tips and best of all we all support each other . Just send me a friend request and a message and I can add you!! Below are some of my postpartum life tips that helped me when I had my son and just recently after having my daughter.  You’ll notice I didn’t write sleep as a tip, I feel like everyone tells you to sleep when you can, we all know that!

Postpartum recovery isn’t always easy but you can thrive with a little self-care and some help of course!

Postpartum Life Tips

Right after coming home:

  • Use the perri  bottle from the hospital when going to the bathroom ( take the bottle home too ) especially if you have a tear ( you don’t want to be wiping
  • Take  sitz baths. My Dr told me ten min a day is long enough , no need to sit for too long
  • Make padsicles if you are swollen ( google it ! )
  • Buy those sprays/ witch hazel ect you see all over pinterest !
  • Take as much stuff from the hospital as you can , then use amazon for things you still need. I bought a bunch of stuff before having Brody then got doubles of almost everything at the hospital . Wait to buy things till you know what you’ll need. You can always amazon in the hospital and you know it will be at your house when you get home!

After a few day:

  • Eat “healing” foods . Our bodies will not heal properly if we are not eating right. Eat foods full of vitamins, antioxidants  and minerals  and eat clean protein , fats and carbs . You and your baby need all those nutrients
  • Drink a TON of water ( and pineapple juice if nursing )
  • Bend over correctly . Your muscles are tight , sore and maybe weak. Remember to always use proper form with picking things up.
  • Wear a belly band. I wear mine for about 45 min a day
  • Walk around. Sitting around all day will leave you sore, tight and tired!
  • Stretch daily, add yoga when you feel up to it
  • Say YES to help with meals . If someone offers to bring a meal over say yes! You can always freeze it and have it handy when in a pinch
  • Create a routine that works for you and your family & stick to it
  • Self Care. Make sure you are taking care of YOU! Shower when you can. Wash your face and brush teeth right when you wake up. Change out of your pjs! Throw some mascara on. Have a glass of wine & relax at night
  • Enjoy your newborn and new way of living!

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

Want to know whats in my hospital bag this time around? Well nothing yet because I haven’t packed!!! But I will be doing that soon and leaving my bag in my car. I had packed my nag for Brody but since my water broke early it was in the car yet ( neither was the car seat! ) So this time around I’m thinking I should prepare a little sooner . Below are my hospital bag must haves for baby number two. I’m sure I’m forgetting something , Id love to hear what you brought! Comment below things I need that I’m missing.

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

  • clothes for me and baby. Newborn and 0-3 months. Luckily with Brody I threw in a newborn outfit last-minute because he was too small to fit into 0-3 months.
  • shower stuff. That first shower with your own things is so good!
  • pineapple juice ( Pineapples are a natural anti-inflammatory that can help with blocked ducts!   pineapple juice is also loaded with fiber and vitamin C )
  • light weight robe. I was SO hot after having Brody, the hospital felt like it was 200 degrees! A light robe is a must
  • lotion for hands and face , tooth-brush & paste ,  brush
  • phone charger for me and Shane
  • chap stick
  • wallet with ID & insurance card
  • protein bars
  • nursing bra  ( I don’t think I ever put this on last time but I’ll pack one just incase )

My list seems small but I think that is all I am bringing. Last time I brought all sorts of after birth care items but the hospital had everything I needed so I will leave those at home this time. Am I forgetting anything?? Please let me know below!

Second Baby To Do List

Now that I’m 32 weeks pregnant and Brody came early I should probably get stuff ready! Before Brody I had plans to make some freezer meals but I never got around to it. Making some meals is definitely on my to do list this time around. Id love hear from you, what I am forgetting?! Comment below with some ideas for me, I appreciate it.

Second Baby To Do List:

  • finish her room. I still need to paint
  • wash things that have been stored. Clothes, blankets, swing cover ect
  • get size one diapers. Its been awhile since I bought small diapers!
  • clean carseat + install base ( we didn’t have it in the car with Brody because he came early! )
  • set up a plan for Brody while we are gone. I am hoping someone will come stay at our house with Brody & the dogs
  • freezer meals
  • pack a bag for me and Shane
  • set up crib ( after I paint )  and pack and play. We used the pack and play a lot with Brody, it has a seat and a changing table on top.
  • make sure I have enough dog food
  • supplies for the house. I want to make sure I have enough coffee, dish soap, tooth paste , shampoo paper towels ect. I know those things are easy to buy on amazon but its nice to have a stock pile. Plus people will be stopping by and it’s always nice to have extra coffee to offer
  • baby proof for when I am nursing. I need to make sure Brody can’t get into anything while I feed the new baby.
  • pick up some of my favorite red wine

Things I have done already

  • stroller set up. I have the uppa baby vista and I already have a rumble seat that come with one set of attachments. I just need to get a second set which isn’t totally necessary but does add extra room.

Ha! I haven’t done a lot ! Id love to know how you prepared for baby. Comment below and get the convo started.

Second Trimester Recap

Second Trimester Recap

Second Trimester Recap

Second Trimester Recap

I am officially out of the second trimester and into the final stretch! Below is my second trimester recap about our summer and what we have been up too!

Pregnancy.  As of now I have had it pretty easy. I passed my glucose test, I have no clue how much weight I have gained but I’m going to say not a lot! I’m at the point where I go tot he doctor every 2 weeks for check ups. I had Brody 15 days early , if that’s the case again then id have this baby in late September!!! No new preggo symptoms or cravings . Most of my clothes do NOT fit me but all my sun dresses do so that’s what I have been wearing most. These last few weeks have ben HOT and humid but we spend most days at the beach so I haven’t been overly hot . Luckily no ankle swelling and I am still moving pretty easily!!

Workouts. Going really well despite the heat the last three weeks.  Getting 4-5 30 minute workouts  in per week plus some walks. My walks are shorter because I have to stop to pee all the time! The days we had extreme humidity I couldn’t go for walks, it was too hot!

Nutrition. Still eating fairly clean. My diet always changes in the summer with some extra ice cream. I will splurge on the real deal but I do also love the yasso bars and feel guilt free eating those . I have been eating lots of sweet potato toast with peanut butter , bonus , Brody loves it too. I also started tracking my water intake making sure I drink over 80 ounces everyday ( prob why I have to pee all day! )

Life . We moved! That was a lot of fun… We moved when I was pregnant with Brody and hopefully this will be our last move!! It has been fun setting up Brodys room and getting the new babies room ready!! Just recently I have been waking up early , like 515am. I haven’t had trouble sleeping just once I’m up that’s it, no falling back to sleep!

Brody . He is also waking up early. Normally he would sleep till about 6:45/7 but he has been getting up around 540 every day. He also just started developing some  separations anxiety from me and Shane , he throws a fit when we leave him! I just started some more  structured play and a new schedule for him. We have always followed a schedule since the day he was born but we are pretty flexible with it. The schedule helps us but it also helps Brody know what to expect. I will be sharing his new 18 month schedule that we plan to stick to for a while soon in a blog post! Brody did great at his 18 month check up. Shane had to take him because I also had an appointment. Brody weighs in at 22 pounds!!

Summer.  Lots of beach time! Getting in as much time at the beach with Brody as we can. We try to go every afternoon after his nap. Lots of times we end up eating dinner at the beach and staying up way past his bed time!

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Stay at home moms have so much going on and it can be tough on your mind and your  body. With so much responsibility you might feel exhausted all the time . But with a few simple changes we can hopefully fix that and avoid the stay at home mom burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

  • Try new things .I know most of us live by a schedule because our kids thrive when they have a routine. But sometimes switching things up can be nice. Try going to a new park or class. Or if you normally go tot he park in the am try going later in the day.  Try out a new lunch spot or picnic in the park once a month.
  • Get ready in the morning. Even if you are doing nothing that day you will feel better knowing you are dressed and ready.  Getting dressed can help change your mood for the day. I’m not talking full faced make up ( unless that’s your thing!) Just get out of your pjs and do something nice with your hair. You will feel more put together and ready to take on the day.
  • Get out of the house !I know this can be tough , especially with multiple kids and during the winter months but it’s so important to get out.  Go for walks , play at the park, head to the beach for a walk .
  • Wake up before your kids. This is tough, especially if your kids do not sleep through the night. But having time in the am to you is amazing! I start my day with a miracle morning and I swear it has changed my life.
  • Ask for help.  And I’m not just talking from your partner. If a messy house is stressing you out maybe hire a cleaner once a month to come in to help out. If grocery shopping is a big stressor, do curbside pick up or have them delivered. Check out pinterest for “mom hack” ideas on rainy days or days you just can’t find something to do with he kids.
  • Focus on you.  Take some time away from the kids. You deserve this! Get your hair done, head out with a friend or have date night a few times a month with no kids!

Remember no one is perfect! Keep in mind that your house is going to be messy sometimes, dinner will be late, the kids will be cranky and that’s OK! Sometimes its okay to leave the dishes in the sink all day !! Don’t expect everyday to be the perfect day, we all have off days . Being a stay at home mom is HARD work and I know you are doing awesome! Kids are exhausting but we love them anyway! And always remember, some day they will be in school all day and you are going to miss these crazy days at home, I know I will!!
