Sanity Saving Tips for Life with a Newborn & Toddler

  • develop a routine & stick to it. I’m sure you have heard this before a 100 times… and that’s because it works! I know plenty of families with no routine and I’m not sure how they get through the day but I can tell you they seem more stressed then me! This will be a life save for you and your toddler. My almost 2-year-old is a creature of habit so jumping back into a routine after having our daughter was a must.
  • if you can, have your partner take your toddler for an hour a few mornings ( even just one or two will help )  a week so you can catch up with an am cat nap those first few months. Newborns sleep a lot and that’s the perfect time for a quick nap ( or shower! )
  • nap when your kids nap . Take time to rest during ONE of your newborn naps.  If your toddler doesn’t nap anymore pick a time to have quiet time during one of the new babies naps where you just relax and watch a movie on the couch!
  • exercise once you are ready. Listen to your body ( and doctor ) you don’t want to jump back into your workouts too soon but exercise is a great way to boost your mood and give you more energy. Plus you want to be in great shape now that you have kids to chase around. Our daily walks started as soon as we got home from the hospital and we all love them.
  • carve out time to do things you love/ spend time with just your spouse. Hopefully your toddlers goes to bed early like mine! That way you have time at night to relax with your partner . Pick a night once a month if you can for date night or time away with a friend .
  • stay connected with your friends. This is so important! You can’t spend all your time with only your kids. Make sure to stay connected with your friends. Make plans once a month, text daily to say hi and if you can plan a get a way with some friends, you deserve it ! Some mom friends and I went out last week at 5 and were home in time to help with bedtime! Even if it’s just a quick night out, its worth it.
  • be kind to yourself. Always remember you are doing an awesome job! Being a mom is tough work and newborns are so unpredictable until they are on a great schedule. Be nice to yourself !
  • involve your toddler when you can. Brody loves to help me clean , throw things away, take the trash out ect. When I am busy with the new baby I give him a towel and his own bottle of “cleaning ” spray ( it’s just water ) and have him clean the windows & tables . He also loves to go tot he fridge and get us waters , when I see him about to break down I quickly ask him to go grab me a water, works every time!
  • spend time outside when you can. Fresh air is a must for me! We try to get outside for at least 30 minutes a day to burn off some energy. Bored toddlers are no fun! Getting them outside will help them burn some energy & have some fun. I wear the new baby so I can still play with Brody. Lately we have been loving obstacle courses . Brody and my you get boxer like to do them together !!

The Best Ways To Recover From Your Workouts

Muscle soreness is real! When I take some time off from training , the first week back is always the toughest. Stairs become impossible , lifting my arms to do my hair hurts and picking up the kids is awful!! no matter how many times i do front squats or wall balls two days later I CAN NOT walk!!! Does this happen to anyone else?   Sometimes being so sore after a workout also makes me not want to workout  again till I’m better which could be 4-5 days  . I know if I want to see results I can’t take 4-5 days off between each hard workout so I have been dedicating some time to my recovery. Below are some of the best ways to recover from your workouts .

Id love to know how you recover! Comment below you favorite ways to recover.

The Best Ways To Recover From Your Workouts

  • Do a proper warm up  & stretch after.  Warming up will help prevent injury and stretching after your workout can help with muscle soreness.
  • Foam roll & use a lacrosse ball. My foam roller is a must. I try to use it right after my workout but I also use it a day or two later when I’m feeling extra sore. I know foam rolling can be painful but it’s totally worth it! I use my lacrosse ball for tough knots in my shoulders and traps. The ball is much better then the roller at reaching those small knots.
  • Epsom salt baths. I know its tough to get a bath in if you are a busy mom like me but if you are feeling EXTRA sore and tired I highly recommend an epsom salt bath
  • Get moving! I know this sounds counter productive but sitting all day will make you more sore! Get moving , go for a little walk and  do some yoga if you can.
  • Stay hydrated + bcaas. Lots of water and branch chain amino acids can help too.  I like to drink my bcaas during and after my workouts . It might be a placebo effect but I think they totally help with DOMS!

Postpartum Life Tips

I can’t believe its been one week since having Remi! Coming home from the hospital after having a baby can be scary! Not only do you now have a new life to take care of, you have to take care of yourself as well ( and siblings!)  If you are not feeling great postpartum , caring for your newborn can be even more difficult and stressful. If you are feeling not so great always remember you are NOT alone! Are you are looking for a fun community of moms Id love for you to join my private face group . We share lots of workouts, recipes, tips and best of all we all support each other . Just send me a friend request and a message and I can add you!! Below are some of my postpartum life tips that helped me when I had my son and just recently after having my daughter.  You’ll notice I didn’t write sleep as a tip, I feel like everyone tells you to sleep when you can, we all know that!

Postpartum recovery isn’t always easy but you can thrive with a little self-care and some help of course!

Postpartum Life Tips

Right after coming home:

  • Use the perri  bottle from the hospital when going to the bathroom ( take the bottle home too ) especially if you have a tear ( you don’t want to be wiping
  • Take  sitz baths. My Dr told me ten min a day is long enough , no need to sit for too long
  • Make padsicles if you are swollen ( google it ! )
  • Buy those sprays/ witch hazel ect you see all over pinterest !
  • Take as much stuff from the hospital as you can , then use amazon for things you still need. I bought a bunch of stuff before having Brody then got doubles of almost everything at the hospital . Wait to buy things till you know what you’ll need. You can always amazon in the hospital and you know it will be at your house when you get home!

After a few day:

  • Eat “healing” foods . Our bodies will not heal properly if we are not eating right. Eat foods full of vitamins, antioxidants  and minerals  and eat clean protein , fats and carbs . You and your baby need all those nutrients
  • Drink a TON of water ( and pineapple juice if nursing )
  • Bend over correctly . Your muscles are tight , sore and maybe weak. Remember to always use proper form with picking things up.
  • Wear a belly band. I wear mine for about 45 min a day
  • Walk around. Sitting around all day will leave you sore, tight and tired!
  • Stretch daily, add yoga when you feel up to it
  • Say YES to help with meals . If someone offers to bring a meal over say yes! You can always freeze it and have it handy when in a pinch
  • Create a routine that works for you and your family & stick to it
  • Self Care. Make sure you are taking care of YOU! Shower when you can. Wash your face and brush teeth right when you wake up. Change out of your pjs! Throw some mascara on. Have a glass of wine & relax at night
  • Enjoy your newborn and new way of living!

Get Out of Your Funk and Back To Healthy Living

Get Out of Your Funk and Back To Healthy Living

Get Out of Your Funk and Back To Healthy Living

Get Out of Your Funk and Back To Healthy Living

Sadly Labor day has passed , summer is over and the kids are back to school . ( and I’m still pregnant ! ) Almost everyone I know is ready to for  change !  Who else had too much ice cream, pasta , bread and cocktails??! By the end of summer we are all in a funk and ready to get back to our normal healthy lifestyles . I know I’m craving normal meals and my daily workouts . When was the last time you got a good workout in? If you said June , trust me you are not alone!

Get Out of Your Funk and Back To Healthy Living

  • set small goals. Set some daily , weekly and monthly goals. Set goals you know you are going to crush! This will give a confidence boost and help you to get out of that funk and to keep going!
  • figure out your biggest challenges. What is going to be your biggest obstacle ? Workouts, nutrition, meal prep, motivation ect . It’s best to figure out your biggest challenge and come up with a plan to get past it.
  • be honest with yourself about how you go to this point. Be honest, maybe you enjoyed ice cream every night, skipped your workouts most days, had  too many cocktails . Being honest with yourself and how you are going to make a change will help you get back to feeling great a lot quicker .
  • simplify your life/meals/workouts.  Make it simple. Don’t get crazy and find some over complicated recipes and meal prep ideas on pinterest. Keep everything easy and make your workouts fun till you get back to a good routine
  • get outside. Take a morning walk or after dinner walk. Getting fresh air & exercise is a great way to boost your mood
  • buy some new things ! Get a new workout outfit, water bottle, sneakers or something fun to make meal prep more fun. Adding something new is exciting and can help get you out of that funk. You don’t have to go crazy, sometimes just a new water bottle is enough for me!
  • start small. Don’t go crazy and throw away all the food in the house and sing up for workout classes 7 days a week. Take it slow. Maybe start with some walks and clean up your diet slowly . Going from 0 to 100 is not going to help you make this healthy lifestyle a long-term thing.
  • focus on one thing at a time. workouts / nutrition. If you have to start with one thing at a time. Take a week a focus on nutrition . Get back to feeling good , heal your gut  and then add in your workouts .
  • track your foods. I know this isn’t always fun! But tracking what you eat even for a few days can give you a lot of perspective about what needs to be changed.
  • finish the day the right way.  Relax, take a hot shower, stretch if you need too. Get your workouts ready for the next day so you have no excuses. Pour a big glass of water and have it ready for when you wake up.  Organize the house a bit so you don’t wake up to chaos. And don’t forget to go to bed early!
  • talk about it/ find an accountability partner. Sharing your new goals with somewhere is a great way to help keep you on track. You can help keep each other accountable and help each other out when things get tough.

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

Want to know whats in my hospital bag this time around? Well nothing yet because I haven’t packed!!! But I will be doing that soon and leaving my bag in my car. I had packed my nag for Brody but since my water broke early it was in the car yet ( neither was the car seat! ) So this time around I’m thinking I should prepare a little sooner . Below are my hospital bag must haves for baby number two. I’m sure I’m forgetting something , Id love to hear what you brought! Comment below things I need that I’m missing.

Hospital Bag Must Haves, Round Two

  • clothes for me and baby. Newborn and 0-3 months. Luckily with Brody I threw in a newborn outfit last-minute because he was too small to fit into 0-3 months.
  • shower stuff. That first shower with your own things is so good!
  • pineapple juice ( Pineapples are a natural anti-inflammatory that can help with blocked ducts!   pineapple juice is also loaded with fiber and vitamin C )
  • light weight robe. I was SO hot after having Brody, the hospital felt like it was 200 degrees! A light robe is a must
  • lotion for hands and face , tooth-brush & paste ,  brush
  • phone charger for me and Shane
  • chap stick
  • wallet with ID & insurance card
  • protein bars
  • nursing bra  ( I don’t think I ever put this on last time but I’ll pack one just incase )

My list seems small but I think that is all I am bringing. Last time I brought all sorts of after birth care items but the hospital had everything I needed so I will leave those at home this time. Am I forgetting anything?? Please let me know below!

Diastasis Recti, A Plan To Help You Close The Gap

Diastasis Recti, A Plan To Help You Close The Gap

You have probably heard about the “mom Pooch” but you might not actually know what it is. It could be ab separation , and the good news is there is a way to fix it!

Diastasis recti  happens during pregnancy when the two large ab muscles separate due to your growing uterus. In some cases your  ab muscles go back to normal once you give birth but in  a lot of women  they do not.  Diastasis recti is very common and often called the mom pooch. If you do have an ab separation ( even if your kids are older ) you can do some moves at home that can help close the gap.

Remember always check with your doctor first before adding in any of the moves from below. Also a Dr can help determine the size of your gap.

I hear from moms all the time that they can not get rid of their belly. Diet and traditional exercise will not help fix DR. You can be spot on with your nutrition and still not see the results you want if you are suffering from DR.

Check for Diastasis Recti:

First you need to check to see if you have DR.  To do so:

  • Lie on your back with your knees bent and the soles of your feet close to your butt.
  • Place your  hand on your abdomen with your fingertips flat at your belly button, fingers facing downward.
  • Gently push your fingertips into your abdomen while rolling your shoulders off of the floor, keeping eyes looking up
  • Here is where you will feel for a separation between  your ab muscles. A  2-2.5 finger gap or more signals diastasis recti.

Close the Gap

Start by doing the  five moves  listed below 5-10 reps per move every day for a week.  Each week add 5-10 more reps in . You want to take deep breathes in and out and really focus on the muscles you are contracting . Try these moves for a month or two and then re-test your ab gab. Avoid sit ups, v ups and planks for now.

Abdominal Drawing In

Draw ins NOT suck ins. This move will safely start to engage and strengthen your ab muscles.  Drawing in is not the same as sucking in, instead its   done by using your  inner ab muscles to pull your abdomen  toward your spine. Think about using your  lower  abs for this move.  This move  is something you can do as you walk around your house, as you sit & stand, when you pick up the baby ect or you can do it lying down .

Belly Breathing

Lying flat on your back.  Deeply inhale, your belly & chest should  inflate. Next you will  slowly exhale all the air out, drawing in your abdominal wall & hold that draw in for as long as you can ( image that you are wearing a corset)  You can also do this move standing up tall. You will  inhale deeply just like if you are on the ground and  exhale, drawing your belly button in and up toward your spine( again image you are wearing a corset )  and hold that draw in for as long as you can

Abduction  Ab Activation

Grab a resistance band and loop it right above your knees.  Lying on your back exhale, draw in and engage   your pelvic floor muscles while you pull your knees apart. Rest & repeat.

Draw in  Rotations

With  a broomstick or small pvc pipe behind your neck on your shoulders, perform the belly breathing from above, when all  your air is exhaled and you are holding your breath and drawing in, slowly rotate from side to side for as long as you can .

 Heel Sliders

Lie flat on your back  with your knees bent ,  feet flat on the floor. Exhale as you engage your core  and slowly slide one heel  along the ground until your leg is straight. Inhale,  engage your core then exhale as you bring your heel back to the start position.

There are a TON of videos on youtube to help learn how to breath correctly I highly recommend watching a couple.

Id love to hear from you! Do you have a gap? Or did you get one after having kids? I love to know if these exercises worked for you. I plan on adding them in this fall after having this baby!

Zucchini Noodle Bowls

Zucchini Noodle Bowl

Zucchini Noodle Bowl

Zucchini Noodle Bowl

These bowls are so tasty and thanks to Trader Joes ( and most stores ) , extra easy to make!! Sometimes life with Brody can be difficult , especially around dinner time!! Getting the pre cut, almost ready foods are not my fav but I do love almost anything from TJ and these things are simple and clean. So I bought some guac, already zoodled zucchini and some already pealed & cubed sweet potatoes to make life easier.

The sweet potatoes come all peeled and cut, all you have to do is cook them. I like to heat them in the microwave for about 2-3 min then add them to a skillet to make them crispy. The zucchini is these bowls are not cooked! How easy is that!! And since the guac comes already made all you have to do is mix it with the zoodles.

I like to top mine with hard-boiled eggs and tomatoes to make it a little more filling.

Zucchini Noodle Bowl

  •  cooked & cubed sweet potato
  • zoodles
  • guacamole
  • salt & pepper
  • Optional, eggs & tomatoes

Mix the zoodles, guacamole , slat & pepper . Add the cooked sweet potatoes , and egg and tomatoes !  Garnish  & enjoy!!!

Trader Joes Haul + What Im Cooking

This week I went to trader Joes specifically to buy some frozen meals! We are busy in the summer and dinner time has become a little stressful . We always get home from the beach right around 530 and every one is STARVING!!! Unless I have something planned dinner gets rushed or we snack too hard and don’t eat our dinner ! So I bought some frozen meals hoping it would help out. Below I shared my Traders Joes haul + what I’m cooking with it. I hope you find it helpful. Id love to hear from you and know what your must have items are when you shop there?

Trader Joes Haul + What Im Cooking

  • Fried rice with chicken and egg. This is a go to in our house! I love their bag of fried rice , it’s a must if you shop at TJ. I always add chicken to mine and sometimes we add a fried egg or two.
Trader Joes Haul + What Im Cooking Trader Joes Haul + What Im Cooking

  • Lemon chicken  with cauliflower stir fry. This lemon chicken is not our fav. Its way to lemony for me. I normally don’t buy it but they were all out of my favorite grilled chicken. It wasn’t that good int he stir fry . The stir fry alone was pretty good, not as good as the fried rice though!!

  • Cauliflower power bowls. I used the frozen riced cauliflower to make some protein bowls. I added chicken, sweet potatoes , avocado and tomatoes . The frozen “rice” is super easy to make!

  • Sweet pot toast . I have been making this almost daily! It is so good and easy to make . Try some of my fav recipes
  •  Chicken burger ( they are frozen patties )  with  corn, avocado & tomato salad

  • Pork tacos with the frozen cauliflower rice and salsa

  • Farro bowls with avocado and a hard-boiled  egg. This was so easy to make and so filling! Definitely buying the faro again
