Sanity Saving Tips for Life with a Newborn & Toddler

Sanity Saving Tips for Life with a Newborn & Toddler

Being a mom is hard ! Once you add a new baby to your family it can get even harder and more stressful . Moms are constantly wondering why the new baby is crying, is she hungry, tired, sick… And if you have more kids at home you worry about them too. Are they dealing with the new baby okay? Are they getting enough attention ect! The worries are endless but I hope to help you release some of that stress with my sanity saving tips for life with a newborn & toddler below. Life is definitely different now that baby number two is here !

Mom Tip: A friend told me if both kids are crying grab the older one first, the baby is okay, but the older one will remember this moment and might be feeling neglected, if possible tend to the older kids needs first!

Id love to know your tips for surviving with a newborn! Get the convo started below .

Sanity Saving Tips for Life with a Newborn & Toddler

  • develop a routine & stick to it. I’m sure you have heard this before a 100 times… and that’s because it works! I know plenty of families with no routine and I’m not sure how they get through the day but I can tell you they seem more stressed then me! This will be a life save for you and your toddler. My almost 2-year-old is a creature of habit so jumping back into a routine after having our daughter was a must.
  • if you can, have your partner take your toddler for an hour a few mornings ( even just one or two will help )  a week so you can catch up with an am cat nap those first few months. Newborns sleep a lot and that’s the perfect time for a quick nap ( or shower! )
  • nap when your kids nap . Take time to rest during ONE of your newborn naps.  If your toddler doesn’t nap anymore pick a time to have quiet time during one of the new babies naps where you just relax and watch a movie on the couch!
  • exercise once you are ready. Listen to your body ( and doctor ) you don’t want to jump back into your workouts too soon but exercise is a great way to boost your mood and give you more energy. Plus you want to be in great shape now that you have kids to chase around. Our daily walks started as soon as we got home from the hospital and we all love them.
  • carve out time to do things you love/ spend time with just your spouse. Hopefully your toddlers goes to bed early like mine! That way you have time at night to relax with your partner . Pick a night once a month if you can for date night or time away with a friend .
  • stay connected with your friends. This is so important! You can’t spend all your time with only your kids. Make sure to stay connected with your friends. Make plans once a month, text daily to say hi and if you can plan a get a way with some friends, you deserve it ! Some mom friends and I went out last week at 5 and were home in time to help with bedtime! Even if it’s just a quick night out, its worth it.
  • be kind to yourself. Always remember you are doing an awesome job! Being a mom is tough work and newborns are so unpredictable until they are on a great schedule. Be nice to yourself !
  • involve your toddler when you can. Brody loves to help me clean , throw things away, take the trash out ect. When I am busy with the new baby I give him a towel and his own bottle of “cleaning ” spray ( it’s just water ) and have him clean the windows & tables . He also loves to go tot he fridge and get us waters , when I see him about to break down I quickly ask him to go grab me a water, works every time!
  • spend time outside when you can. Fresh air is a must for me! We try to get outside for at least 30 minutes a day to burn off some energy. Bored toddlers are no fun! Getting them outside will help them burn some energy & have some fun. I wear the new baby so I can still play with Brody. Lately we have been loving obstacle courses . Brody and my you get boxer like to do them together !!

Find Your Mom Groove

Find Your Mom Groove

Find Your Mom Groove

Find Your Mom Groove

We all know motherhood is amazing . But becoming a SAHM can seem a little crazy. Iv been a SAHM now for 21 months and I LOVE it, but I agree that it is not for everyone . Some of my friends are just starting to have their kids and they always ask me ” what do you do all day , do you go crazy?!” You have to find your mom groove . This might take some time and that’s okay.

Don’t be fooled by the moms that look like their lives are totally amazing. Remember social media is a place that people post their BEST pictures so stop comparing your life to theirs . Life isn’t always having the best behaved kids, cleanest house on the block or always looking like you just stepped out of a salon! But you can feel good & have some awesome days with your kids as a SAHM.

Id love to share with you how I found my groove and how you can too.  Below are my tips for:

  • getting a schedule together
  • when to clean/organize
  • you time
  • schedule for your kids
  • taking back your mornings

Find Your Mom Groove

  1. Getting a schedule together : It might not sound fun , but having a daily schedule can make your life so much easier.  I like to plan my weekly menu on Sundays or Mondays and meal prep to make things a bit easier. I wake up every morning around the same time ( before your kids if you can ) While having my morning coffee and doing my MM I try to plan my day.  Now that the cooler weather is here its easier for me to stick to mine and Brodys schedule.  ( more on his schedule below ) We eat lunch and dinner the same times each day to help keep the day predictable . You need to find a schedule that works for you and your family.
  2. When to clean : I like to clean and organize the house all day, ha! We try to clean up all the toys before we move onto something else. It sounds weird but Brody loves to help clean, we vacuum & mop the floors together 2-3 times a week after breakfast. While Brody eats lunch I quickly pick up the house and then do laundry once he goes down for a nap , this doesn’t take long so I still have time for other things while he naps. I also like to get dinner ready during his nap time.  After dinner I make sure to clean the kitchen, waking up to a clean kitchen will make your morning stress free! As soon as Brody goes to bed at 7 I do another quick clean up.  Since I kind of pick up throughout the day the house never feels totally out of control
  3. You time. You need time for yourself . Make some YOU time in the am or pm before your kids wake up or after they go to sleep.  Even if you take time for you a few times a week it can help. You need to feel good to get your groove back! Every morning make sure you get dressed , wash your face and throw on some mascara , staying in your PJ’s all day is never a good idea. Make sure you are also putting your health first and eat a balanced healthy diet.
  4. Schedule for your kids. Again this might not sound fun but get your kids on a schedule. Eat and sleep around the same times everyday. This is Brodys schedule now but I will change things up as he gets older.
  5. Take back your mornings. This one sounds the hardest but trust me it is worth it.  Wake up before your kids and your day will be a little less stressful.  I wake up and do a miracle morning and I highly suggest you do some version of this!

How To Workout With Your Toddler

How To Workout With Your Toddler

Having kids has definitely changed my life in so many ways! When it comes to my workouts , a lot has changed. Before Brody I would go to crossfit around 9 and hang around after without any worthy about the clock. Once I had Brody that all went out the window! The 9am class was during his nap time,  getting up before him was NOT going to happen and the I was too tired for the night class .  Since my workouts are important to me I HAD to find time to get them in. Working out during his nap time was just not for me. I had other things I wanted to do ( like blog ) during his nap so I knew I needed to figure something out.   Below are some tips that worked for me  and  I hope they can help you too! Jumping back into workouts post baby can be hard , remember start off slow until you find your groove !

Do you workout with your kids? Id love to hear from you , share some of your favs below .

How To Workout With Your Toddler

  • Walk/run with a stroller . We did lots of walking ( I am NOT a runner! ) I think walks count as a workout, especially with a new-born.
  • Bike ride. You can ride with them or if your kids are old enough they can ride while you run. We put Brody in a bike seat pretty early. He loves the bike and it is a total leg burner
  • Swimming . Depending on your kids age this can be hard. Since Brody can’t swim on his own I can use him as a weight or red water while he floats in his tube.  Brody loves to be thrown in the air and caught, combined that upper body move with some squats int he water and you have a great workout!
  • Involve them . I give Brody some 1lb weights while I do one of my workouts and he loves it. He likes to do the jumping moves, planks, mt climbers ect with me. It’s great for both of us. I can usually get in about a 30 min workout with him
  • Playground workout. Take your kids to the playground and get a workout in.  First you can chase your kids around the play ground, that will feel like a workout! You can also do lunges & squats while they swing, do pull ups on the monkey bars or get a whole body weight circuit in while they play. Grab some mom friends and make it a weekly date.

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

Stay at home moms have so much going on and it can be tough on your mind and your  body. With so much responsibility you might feel exhausted all the time . But with a few simple changes we can hopefully fix that and avoid the stay at home mom burnout

Avoid The Stay At Home Mom Burnout

  • Try new things .I know most of us live by a schedule because our kids thrive when they have a routine. But sometimes switching things up can be nice. Try going to a new park or class. Or if you normally go tot he park in the am try going later in the day.  Try out a new lunch spot or picnic in the park once a month.
  • Get ready in the morning. Even if you are doing nothing that day you will feel better knowing you are dressed and ready.  Getting dressed can help change your mood for the day. I’m not talking full faced make up ( unless that’s your thing!) Just get out of your pjs and do something nice with your hair. You will feel more put together and ready to take on the day.
  • Get out of the house !I know this can be tough , especially with multiple kids and during the winter months but it’s so important to get out.  Go for walks , play at the park, head to the beach for a walk .
  • Wake up before your kids. This is tough, especially if your kids do not sleep through the night. But having time in the am to you is amazing! I start my day with a miracle morning and I swear it has changed my life.
  • Ask for help.  And I’m not just talking from your partner. If a messy house is stressing you out maybe hire a cleaner once a month to come in to help out. If grocery shopping is a big stressor, do curbside pick up or have them delivered. Check out pinterest for “mom hack” ideas on rainy days or days you just can’t find something to do with he kids.
  • Focus on you.  Take some time away from the kids. You deserve this! Get your hair done, head out with a friend or have date night a few times a month with no kids!

Remember no one is perfect! Keep in mind that your house is going to be messy sometimes, dinner will be late, the kids will be cranky and that’s OK! Sometimes its okay to leave the dishes in the sink all day !! Don’t expect everyday to be the perfect day, we all have off days . Being a stay at home mom is HARD work and I know you are doing awesome! Kids are exhausting but we love them anyway! And always remember, some day they will be in school all day and you are going to miss these crazy days at home, I know I will!!

How Long Should My Workouts Be

How Long Should My Workouts Be

How Long Should My Workouts Be

How Long Should My Workouts Be

How long should my workouts be, I get asked this question all the time . Personally I think everyone is different and what works from me might not work for you. That being said I have done lots of different kinds of workouts at all different lengths. At crossfit , the classes where an hour-long but we did not workout that whole hour. After the strength portion the actual workout was anywhere from 8-20 min  on average . Post Brody I started with 30 minute workouts , mainly 21 day fix, max 30 and 21 day fix extreme. I had great results with those quick workouts . I also did 80 day obsession after Brody , those workouts are longer , between 30-60 min. Honestly didn’t love the longer workouts anymore! Mentally, I believe it’s easier to  motivate myself for a 30 min workout.

Why I love shorter workouts:

30 minute workouts are my jam! 45 minutes is my limit . Being a mom is busy and finding the time to get a workout in can be hard BUT we can all mange 30 minutes a few times a week. I found with the longer workouts I skipped them more or Brody was over it by 40 minutes and Id have to stop anyway. The best results I have seen are when I do quick effective workouts with a combo of weights & cardio. Honestly,  I went from skipping /dreading my longer workouts  to looking forward to my quick short ones . I always feel great after. Remember no matter how long your workout is quality & focus  is far more effective than quantity.

Remember everyone is different and you might have to test out some workout times, programs , classes ect to find what works best for you.

Pregnant:

I find 30 minute workouts are perfect when pregnant . Always remember to listen to your body, rest when needed and modify as your pregnancy progresses . As you get further along you may want to shorten your workouts even more, maybe to 15-20 min . I typically do about 30 minutes and that’s just perfect for this growing body. I aim for 4-5 workouts a week but I will include a long walk as my workout. It doesn’t all have to be in the gym. Remember short workouts are still effective !

After baby:

After having Brody quick 30 minute workouts were a must! No mom as time for an hour-long workout unless your gym has a day care! I plan to stick to my 30 minute workouts after baby number 2 comes this fall.

How to  have short effective workouts:

  • plan your workouts / follow a plan and be ready. Have your mat, weights, timer whatever you need ready for the workout
  • limit your rest periods
  • focus on the workout . Turn your phone off. It’s crazy how much time can be wasted checking our phones  during a workout
  • try timed workouts . Do circuits that are timed out or set your timer for 30 minutes and see how many rounds you can get done in the time frame
  • make a playlist. Make a 30 minute play list and stop skipping songs. Here is another big time waster . Changing the song searching for the right one can add a few extra unwanted minutes to your workout
  • find a workout video/program that is only 30 minutes and follow along

How long do you typically workout for? Do you love quick 30 minute workouts like me or do you love those longer ones?? Id love to know, comment below and get the convo started.

My Miracle Morning Routine

My Miracle Morning Routine

My Miracle Morning Routine

My Miracle Morning Routine

Do you have a morning routine ? Almost all of the most successful people in the world have a morning routine. After reading the  The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM) I learned the importance of starting the day right. Here is how I start my day almost everyday. This is my miracle morning routine until  the new baby comes this fall . I know after she is here  things will have to change and I will share my new morning routine when that happens!

During my miracle morning routine I follow the SAVERS from the book. The life savers stand for Silence, Affirmation, Visualization , Exercise , Reading Scribing. To learn more I highly recommend reading the book.

My Miracle Morning Routine:

  • 6:15 am:  wake up, usually before Brody . Brush teeth, grab some water and start the coffee .
  • 6:30: Meditate/ gratitude or silence . I meditate for about 5-10 minutes.  I use the guided meditation ap lets meditate . Its free and I didn’t want to pay for headspace . If you are willing to pay check out headspace .
  • 6:35: Affirmations about my life, being a mom, wife, blogger.  Followed by reading  quotes from a few different aps , I use enliven & think up

Make a cup of coffee.

  • 6:45: Visualize,  I either visualize how I want my day to go or how I want my life to be in 2-5-10 years. Pinterest boards are also a great way to make a vision board , I have a few different ones to look at.
  • 6:50: Then I do one of the journal prompts from an ap I have ( write light)
  • 6:55: Blog/social media stuff is next and this usually takes the longest.  I check my calendars to see what blog posts I have schedules . Then I check my blog and if I posted something then I share it on my social media accounts. This takes about 10-15 minutes just to look over blog posts, schedules and think of new ideas to write about. I also check my instagram & Facebook  at this time and post if I need to.
  • 7:15: Brody is usually up at this point so I make him breakfast
  • 7:25: While Brody eats I try to read a few pages from the book I’m reading. I read before bed every night so I don’t feel too bad about skipping this part of my SAVERS.

When I finish I  move right into cleaning up any part of the house that needs a quick declutter. I make sure to make my bed and just do a quick clean up!

All of this is done before 8am!

Here are all the apps I use! I have been loving simple habit and now do some of the bed time routines they offer.

miracle morning routine

Short Version to start your day with gratitude and confidence :

  • daily motivation ap & gratitude  – then leave your bed!

  • visualize goals/dreams
  • Plan the day
  • Go!

May Monthly Round Up

May Monthly Round Up

I can’t believe it is already June 1st! This pregnancy is flying by, I have already hit the half way mark. May was a super busy month for us yet I feel like nothing major happened!

Pregnancy

As most of you know we found out at our  17 week ultrasound that we are having a GIRL! We were kinda shocked but deep down I had a feeling! Of course I have already started a pinterest board for her bedroom! Right around the same time ( 17 weeks ) I started to feel some movement. Mostly at night when I’m trying to go to bed , she starts kicking. I haven’t weighed myself and I am not really sure how much I weighed before I got pregnant so I’m not sure how much I have gained so far! I have no new preggo issues, food aversions or cravings. So far my sleep has changed either, but I know that way is coming that I’m going to be uncomfortable at night, but for now I’ll take my 8 hours!!

Brody

Brody is a lot of fun right now ( and a lot of work) ! He is talking more and now loves to say momma . He also loves to bark like the dogs!! He is def an outside kid and I have to drag him inside when its time to go in.  He still sleeps 7-630/7ish most nights and we are very thankful for that. We love spending out days outside at the water table or on the beach.

Workouts/Nutrition

My workouts this month have been great! It’s weird because I have been loving hiit workouts which normally are not my fav. I have also been going on  lots of walks. My nutrition has also been good this month, no food aversions. I have been looking for healthier desserts and have been loving lasso bars , graham crackers with cool whip and frozen pops for Brody. I am now looking to make over my favorite unhealthy treats a healthier way. I will share all the recipes I find.

Products

This month I bought some new products that are safer for us. I got new sunscreens for me & Brody. I ended up going with Babyganics Mineral-Based Baby Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 50, 6oz Tube (Pack of 2) and Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30, 3 Fl. Oz. (Pack of 3). I needed some new face wash but everything in the store had fragrance listed in the ingredients  ( avoiding fragrance ) so I went with the brand Simple . It doesn’t score great but it’s not too horrible so the search continues!

I have been playing around with my coffee and I’m loving  cold brew coffee that I make at home &  buttered coffee with cashew milk . I throw it all in my blender real quick so its nice and frothy.

Shane got me succulents  for mother’s day and I LOVE them! I really hope I don’t kill them. I’ll take any advice on keeping them alive!!

What Is Collagen

What Is Collagen

I get asked all the time what is collagen and should I be taking it?  You may have seen collagen listed  in your body lotions and  in some supplements you take and have always wondered what it was for.  Collagen is a protein in the body that helps give structure to our hair, skin, nails, bones, ligaments and tendons. If you want strong shiny hair, strong nails and glowing skin you might want to add some collagen into your diet .

“Collagen is a protein made up of amino-acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine, all of which help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, nails, as well as gut health stay as healthy as possible.

Collagen protein is different from whey and casein protein because of these high levels of amino acids. Muscular growth, joint health and an overall glowing appearance can be partially attributed to the amino acid blend in collagen that can’t be found anywhere else. ” This info is right from Vital Proteins site !

Good for Our Skin & Body

Collagen is a building block for our  skin and helps with its elasticity . It’s what makes our skin stay toned and taught. Collagen also helps with our tissues, ligaments and tendons . As we age our body produces less collagen and we  lose that glow and flexibility , collagen is there to help.

Vital Proteins Collagen

“Vital Proteins Collagen contains 18 amino-acids, including 8 out of 9 essential amino-acids.  It is characterized by the predominance of glycine, proline and hydroxyproline, which represent about 50% of the total amino-acid content.  Glycine and proline concentration is 10 to 20 times higher than in other proteins. This very specific composition of amino acids, provides Vital Proteins Collagen with nutritional functional properties that can not be found with other protein sources. Our Collagen is a high purity natural bio-active product containing more than 97% protein, supplied in a form that can be easily used and digested by the human body. “Again this info is straight from the vital proteins site!

Benefits

  • glowing skin
  • joint health which is so important to help keep you moving  and pain-free
  •  Bone strength
  • increased performance/energy during your workout .
  • improvement with your  digestion. Better gut health, helps leaky gut by “sealing”  or forming connective tissue
  • improves hair & nails
  • helps boost your metabolism

How to add collagen to your life

The easiest way I add collagen into my diet is in  a pre workout drink or in my morning oatmeal . A lot of people add a scoop to their morning coffee , most are flavorless so you won’t even notice. A few companies make bars with added collagen in them. You can also add the powder to muffins, smoothies, home-made dressings and on your oatmeal. Collagen is not a great post workout supplement and should not replace your post workout shake if you have one.
